Show 19 - New Year coming, new songs to hear !

I knew things were looking up when I received an envelope addressed this way on Christmas Eve:

It makes me sound like one of those 70s DJs on Radio 1 !! It gave me such a laugh and the music was so good that it had to go in this week's show.

I was going to do a restrospective of all of the music I'd played since the show started in September; but then I remembered that I'm here to play you great new music, and I should be looking forward to the New Year and not back at the old year. If you want to treat yourself to a look back at what's been on Three From Leith in 2005, just go through the Archives which you'll find links to on the right-hand side. I'm marching on with fresh, exciting new bands who're giving me that little shiver of pleasure each time I hear them. This week's no exception, so load up the file and kick back with the music of:

Contramano - Checking U
Buy their excellent, full-length CD album 'Contramano' here
Email the band or visit their MySpace page to see and hear more about them.

funkspiel - Swing
Follow the link on their website to listen to more of their demos, or email the guys as they're really keen to hear what you think of what they're doing.
Alternatively, visit their MySpace page to hear more.

The Dead Beat Club - I Wish You Well
The band have two EPs which will soon be available via PayPal; you can sample them here and keep checking back to see when they're on sale.
Alternatively email the band to express your interest in buying their music and they should be able to sort you out in the meantime. And they have a MySpace page to visit too !

Once again, the soundbed music was supplied by the excellent torchomatic

Thanks to everyone for listening, subscribing, leaving comments, emailing me, feeding back to the artists and - most importantly of all - supporting the artists by buying their music. It's been my priviledge to play them since I started in September and I know that the bands are genuinely touched by everyone's support.

Keep up the good work in 2006 !

From me, Jasna and on behalf of all the artists you've heard and supported - Happy New Year !!

The Missing Christmas track is here !

Much too good to sit on until next Christmas, I present the track I somehow managed to forget to cue up and play on the Christmas show:

3 Blind Mice - Watchstar

A beautiful, festive track with layered vocals which build up throughout the song. It really does evoke a really Christmassy feeling.

You can find the guys' CDs for sale here, along with details of where you can buy and download individual tracks.

Whatever, wherever and however you're celebrating this time of year, Jasna and I wish you all a peaceful and happy holiday and we'll be back next week !

Video interview with Hungry Lucy

I know that many listeners really enjoyed the chilled-out, all-female vocalist show recently (Show 15), and especially the music of Hungry Lucy. Here's some information I received today from Hungry Lucy which you may want to check out:

The 3rd in the Hungry Lucy Video to Go series is a 15 minute documentary called Introducing Hungry Lucy. This video serves as a great intro to new fans of Hungry Lucy as well as offering some additional insight what makes the duo tick. The documentary includes interviews with both Christa Belle and War-N as well as plenty of live performance footage, concept video clips and behind the scenes photos and video. Christa and War-N discuss their first 3 albums, 2 US tours, inspirations, motivations and future plans.

This documentary has also been accepted by CurrentTV for their STUDIO website. If the video gets enough "greenlights" it may make it to TV. Do your part by viewing the video and giving us a "greenlight". CurrentTV, for those unfamiliar with it, is a fairly new television network launched in the US by former vice president Al Gore. Most of the content is created and approved by the viewers. Think of it as public access on serious steroids with plenty of funding. :)

Aside from CurrentTV, download the video for iPod, PSP or watch online in Windows or Mac formats (broadband connection highly recommended).

You can also subscribe to the video podcast feed via: ITunes

Enjoy !

Missing track !

I just realised that I missed a track out of the Christmas Show that I had really wanted to play; I'll put it up over the next few days as it really was beautifully done and very Christmassy.

A Christmas Rock'n'Light extravaganza

You know how some people go over the top and deck their houses and gardens out in a tacky Christmas lighting frenzy ?

Well, here's something a little different and done with much more skill, thought and individuality ! Turn it up loud, click on the headline and prepare to be amazed !

Man decks house with synchronized lights

MASON, Ohio (AP) - Some people at Christmas time are content to deck their homes with evergreen wreaths and holly, and maybe a few strings of lights made to look like glimmering icicles. Not Carson Williams. He spends nearly two months hooking up 25,000 lights, then programs them to dance to Christmas music.

Show 18 - The Xmas Show !

Well, as you can see from these pictures taken on Saturday at my parent's house that we're in the mood already !! Apologies for my dishevelled look - colds give me quite bad outbreaks of plukes (a Scottish word which I'd like you to look up as an educational challenge) so I tend to avoid shaving until things have cleared up. And boy, do I have the most pathetically weedy, patchy excuse for a beard ! You'd think at my age I'd manage more than that pathetic thatch... The worst of my cold is over, though as you'll hear my voice is still sounding slightly different from it's normal state.

Hoping that you're all gearing up for a fun time over the festive season, I've lined up a selection of serious and not-so-serious tracks to take you up to the 25th. Hope you enjoy them ! This isn't the usual Three From Leith - there are more than three tracks - but I'm in the holiday spirit and I just went for a fun mix. Peace, happiness and best wishes to you all.

IT CD ordering and Frappr mapping

I received the following information from James from the band IT about how to order their current CD, 'Over and Out':

"We are currently in the process of setting up an online store on our website www.spacehouse.tv , but this will probably take a little while to set up. What we have done in the meantime is that people have sent us £5 in the post (or a cheque made payable to Nick Jackson), and we have posted off copies of the album (price includes p & p).

If you are ok with doing that, the address to send it to is:

Nick Jackson (IT)
32 Hutton Lane
Harrow Weald
Harrow
Middlesex
HA3 6RD"

On a separate issue - Frappr maps ! My apologies if you received an invite from me to join and are wondering why. I only meant to invite a handful of people but instead invited the whole of my GMail address book. People have already been visiting and wondering if the email was some kind of devious spam as they couldn't see a Frappr map on the page. The simple answer was that it wasn't spam, and I just hadn't got around to putting the map up before you came looking ! It's now there. Feel free to add yourself / stick your pin in to let me know where you are.

Show 17 - Tunes (not the menthol nose-clearing kind)

Was the 'Tunes' ad a specifically British thing ? The man choked with the cold, trying to ask at the railway station ticket booth for a "First class dicket to Dottingham, please" as he hadn't eaten one and had his passages cleared with the cherry menthol vapour. Well, I could do with some today as I'm choked. I've kept the chatting to a minimum (who shouted 'Hurrah !' up the back there ?!) to save my voice, which tends to start cracking up quite quickly. My head's also stuffed with cotton wool so my thinking's not quite straight either - possibly why I played a Freddy liner twice in the show and then had the outro start up very quietly !! But it's all part of the live podcasting experience so I left it in, fluffs and all.

IT - Space Cadet Part 2
Email the guys and ask them about buying their music

Graystar - Life Support
The band have free mp3 files to download on their site
Give them some feedback on what you think here

Phideaux - Party
You can but Phideaux's music on CDBaby His next CD, "313", isn't actually out yet (despite what I said in the show, sorry), but keep your eyes on his site and on CDBaby for it appearing soon

Thanks to Freddy for the liner (more from him next week)

Background music was 'Cebrella' by Denis Kitchen

Show 16 - The Scottish Podcast Clan is here !!

I made the announcement in show 14 that there was something exciting coming along soon; well, it's here !! Given that some of us have been linking to the site for a few weeks now, even while it was in development, it's probably no surprise that the 6 Scottish podcasts have banded together to form the Scottish Podcast Clan.

Yes, pop along to www.scottishpodcasts.com to find the best Scottish podcasts brought together under one roof. You'll be able to get all of the feeds for your favourite shows in one place, as well as being able to comment on what you've heard.

There's a nice, large link in the right-hand column which will take you there as if by magic !

So, in honour of this historic development, I put together a quick show featuring three stylistically-different Scottish artists, so that listeners old and new can enjoy a sample of the incredible variety of talent to emanate from this beautiful but small - yet incredibly creative and artistic - country that we call "home":

The Guttersound - Make Believers
('amazing Minx Punk' on Edinburgh's Broken Clothing Records - expect a lot more from this label on upcoming shows !)

Maeve O'Boyle - Not His Fault
(site not Firefox-friendly; best viewed in Internet Explorer)
"a 'natural lyricist' with an 'exceptional' voice"

Fourteen Hours - She Cried
Formed in 2003 by four mates in Edinburgh, named after a legendary drinking session during the festival season - playing at Nektar in Edinburgh on the 14th December, so catch them live !

Support Scottish independent artists - buy their music ! If they don't have any available yet, drop them an email and let them have some feedback on what you thought of their song(s) which you heard on Three From Leith.

Show 15 - Block out the Christmas stresses

A very different show this week - no rock and no roll. I'm feeling in need of relaxation as the thought of Christmas fast approaching and no shopping done yet is stressing me out; handy then that recently I've been approached by bands playing some very laid-back, electronic music with female vocalists. I used to relax and switch off on the bus to work by listening to Enigma and Deep Forest, and these take me to the same places in my head. Hopefully you'll enjoy going along for the ride too.

So close those eyes (unless you're driving or walking along the street), let the stresses of the day slip away and sink down into yourself with tracks by:

Hungry Lucy - Her Song
Buy their music on iTunes, or from their site

I Am Jen - At The Same Time
Get Jen's 'Broken' EP on CDBaby or from her site

46Bliss - In A Long Time
Buy their music at mp3tunes.com, or from their site

Remember folks - independent artists are for life, not just for Christmas. Please support them by buying their music and feeding back to them via their websites.

Tonight's soundbed music was once more 'The World Outside My Window' and 'White Hotel', supplied by torchomatic.

A slightly longer wait

The news that I'd been aiming to give you today will be delayed for a little while longer, but it'll be worth it in the end.

In the meantime, it's the first of the month so why not pop over to Podcast Alley and vote for Three From Leith as well as all of your other favourite podcasts ? Go on - see if you can bring us all a little Christmas cheer !!
